An IT Book or A History Book?

1986 Edition of "Computer Today"

There is nothing wrong with the title of the book indeed. Unless you soon realise that this book bears the title that has remained unchanged since 1986, the year it was published. I stumbled upon this book on the shelf of the IT (Information Technology) section in the library of so-called the leading institute of technology of the country.Β  As I leafed through the book, I realised that this book should not be placed in the IT section since there are topics and objects that most of the readers who began to become mouse potatoes in the 1990s I bet are not familiar with. How many of today’s Internet users are familiar with CPM-80 or CPM-86?? Or…. can they imagine that cassettes that they used to play music from the boom-boxes are the storage device of computer data in the past? Or obviously could someone imagineΒ  that the topic of Internet is nowhere to be found on the book of “Computer Today”??

Well…. for those who want to study how data processing evolved from the bulky space-consuming computers to the mid-1980s when data microprocessing began to flourish, this is the right book for them. But if you want to study how computer systems and the processing systems run today, you must be a farce if you read this. Well… I hope this edition of the book will be replaced with the newest edition of the book or the likes. This book must be removed from the IT section or if they have history section in the library they can move the book to the section where it belongs to today. For your information, the book is not the only dinosaur on the shelf, there are more books that provide more antiquated information on IT!!

Index of the book, Internet topic is nowhere to be found... Sorry for the fuzziness of the pic.... I took the pic using the mobile phone's camera, that's why I couldn't do macrophotography.

  2. Good morning Yari,
    The book’s title clearly indicates that the book was printed 26 years ago where computers were still very ” rare “.

  3. Jadi Internet itu dari kata itu
    *pura2 ngeh*πŸ˜€

  4. 1986 is the first time I have computer when the whole housing complex have no idea what the computer is. We have it due to my father was working in computer factory in Pulogadung..heee. BTW lagi nostalgia nih kang?

  12. Library of Indonesia is still dear to remove or replace the old with the new book. In the library where I was teaching there I era school books, still the old curriculum. So students are rarely fair to the library

  13. Wah ngomong2 tetnang buku, bapak mau baca buku tulisan saya enggak? [Maaf promosi abis]πŸ˜€ http://mathematicse.wordpress.com/2010/04/05/ngobrol-mat-cara-asyik-belajar-matematika/#more-1065

    @achoey

    Hah??πŸ˜€

    @boyin

    yes I remember that time when people still had no idea of what is a computer. One described that computer could do anything from doing houseworks (literally!) to doing paperworks flawlessly… Of course it is a silly description to what we know today.

    @buJaNG

    Ho’oh…. (biar cepet)…:mrgreen:

    @Raffaell

    @Nurita Putranti

    Yes, I realise that it is costly to buy new books especially those of imported books. But now tuition fee has raised more than 20 times since 25 years ago. How can they fail to afford a few new books??πŸ™‚

    @mathematicse

    Ok… sudah meluncur ke TKP. Nanti bukunya saya cari deh…. kalau perlu toko2 buku se Bandung saya ubek2…. hehehe….

    @darahbiroe

  22. Blog walking,,,,,, lam kenal klo belom kenalan

  23. IT evolved rapidly, therefore, the existence of IT manuals are just like a baby dressing: temporarily can be usedπŸ˜›

    as i remember the history of computer; from gigantic ibm machine into tiny-flat netbook. technology is surely changed fast, and turned the manuals into something old and oddπŸ˜›

  24. @Blogger puisi

    Itu juga udah termasuk komen kok….:mrgreen:

    @Nurita Putranti

    That’s why…. because other fees like “building maintenance” etc. should be used to buy new books for the library too…

    @fansmaniac

    Ok deh…. thanks ya. Tapi please deh… saya sudah nggak begitu suka lagi dengan “award-award”an, sudah terlalu sering dan klise jadi tidak begitu fun lagi. However thanks deh ya buat award-nya…πŸ™‚

    @djanuar

    Ok… salam kenal juga aja deh ya…

    @Fikar

    Ok… lam kenal juga…

    @Hey, Jude!

    Some olds (which are also usually odd) are extremely valuable but some olds like this one are really useless no matter how odd they are….:mrgreen:
